Can You Use Shoe Polish On Handbags?

A question we’re often asked by our clients is whether shoe polish can be used on handbags. This is most commonly asked in relation to cleaning a leather stain, removing marks / grime or rejuvenating the appearance of a bag by restoring any lost colour.

Shoe polishes are composed of natural waxes, solvents and a small amount of dye and are dispensed in a waxy semi-solid cream or paste. While excellent for cleaning and maintaining shoes, polishes should never be applied to a handbag.

While there is always a temptation to use shoe polish to remove any marks, grime or even “recolour” a handbag that looks worse for wear, the risks of permanently ruining your bag (or other item) far outweigh any benefit.

Shoe polishes have a high incidence of colour transfer and if applied to a handbag or other leather accessory dyes will likely stain or discolour your clothes or other item. In addition to colour transfer, most shoe polishes are heavily solvent-based and may cause the leather to dry out.

Never apply shoe polish to any sensitive or delicate leathers such as those used for designer bags. Low quality polishes can even strip the finish of a handbag, causing the leather to stain or permanently discolour.

The other issue with applying shoe polish to a handbag is that the colour will inevitably fade (or transfer to your clothes) over time. Shoe polish is a non-permanent solution to discolouration.

Instead of using polish on your handbag, we recommend using a nutrient-rich leather conditioner to clean any marks or grime and for general upkeep. For any stains or discolouration most handbags will require either professional cleaning or leather recolouring / redeying.
